FOG Architecture reimagines the spa experience, crafting a sensory journey in Beijing's bustling Sanlitun.
In a bold departure from conventional spa design, FOG Architecture has created an immersive sanctuary in the heart of Beijing. The YUSPA project is an invitation to step into a world where tranquility is more than just a quiet room. But how do they achieve this?
The answer lies in the artful manipulation of light and materials. As visitors traverse the long entrance corridor, they're greeted by a soothing water feature, a subtle hint of the sensory delights to come. The product display area and reception area branch off this corridor, each designed to captivate and relax.
The display area boasts a striking centerpiece: a lengthy copper table showcasing essential oils, with stone columns and copper shelves adding to the aesthetic. This area is a feast for the eyes, but it's just the beginning.
Privacy is paramount, and FOG Architecture ensures this through independent circulation routes leading to various treatment areas, each equipped with changing rooms and showers.
And here's where it gets intriguing: lighting takes center stage as the primary design tool. Bright lights in the public areas showcase products, but as you venture deeper into the spa, the lighting dims, creating an increasingly intimate ambiance.
Sheer curtains and electric sliding doors, acting as partitions, further enhance this play of light and shadow, ensuring privacy without sacrificing openness.
The spa's materials palette is a thoughtful blend of warm and cool tones. Concrete provides a sturdy, continuous base, while copper accents and wooden furniture infuse warmth and softness into the space.
"We wanted to create an experience, not just a space," explains FOG Architecture. "By avoiding over-decoration, we allow the senses to focus on the healing process."
This multi-sensory approach is further emphasized by the studio, who believes that engaging the visual, auditory, and olfactory senses is key to a truly immersive and healing experience. The sound of flowing water and the varying aromas throughout the day are subtle yet powerful elements in this sensory journey.
FOG Architecture, founded by Zheng Yu and Zhan Di, has made its mark in Shanghai and Chongqing, with recent projects including a minimalist residence and a unique mobile bakery. This Beijing spa is yet another testament to their innovative approach to design, challenging the notion of what a spa can be.
