Reawakening his art career; local resident has exhibit at Heart of Salisbury
Mike Ploplis, a local resident of Salisbury, has recently experienced a resurgence in his art career, with an exhibit at Heart of Salisbury that showcases his unique style and process. Ploplis, who had been creating art daily but not focusing on his art business, has now embarked on a journey to pursue his passion more seriously.
What makes Ploplis' work particularly fascinating is his use of unconventional materials and techniques. He combines common enamel spray paints, purchased at a hardware store, with dish soap to create his distinctive paintings. This combination allows him to achieve a batik effect, where the soap acts as a protecting layer, creating textured layers of acrylic paint. This technique not only adds depth and interest to his work but also serves as a form of therapy, helping him manage his PTSD.
Ploplis' journey into art began as a way to improve his therapeutic approaches to treatment. He was introduced to art therapy and started exploring different avenues of creativity through painting. This decision to make art a genuine pursuit in life was an easy one for him, as he had been struggling with the mental health challenges that came with his career as a flight paramedic. By giving up the things that were causing him pain, he was able to slow down, enjoy the process more, and develop the skills and abilities to make better art.
The exhibit, titled "Fauxtanicals," includes original paintings, prints, giclees, and one-of-a-kind upcycled clothing art. It is a collaboration with Wivianny "Wivi" DeHaas, the owner of Heart of Salisbury, who has a great eye for curating and elevating Ploplis' work. DeHaas notes that Ploplis' art style is vibrant and meaningful, with life coming out through his work. The exhibit will be on display through the end of July, providing an opportunity for more people to experience Ploplis' unique style and process.
Ploplis' favorite medium to use is common enamel spray paints, which he combines with dish soap to create his distinctive paintings. This combination allows him to achieve a batik effect, where the soap acts as a protecting layer, creating textured layers of acrylic paint. This technique not only adds depth and interest to his work but also serves as a form of therapy, helping him manage his PTSD.
Ploplis' art is not just a hobby; it is a way for him to connect with others and share his experiences. He enjoys talking with people about his art process and answering their questions. This exhibit has provided an opportunity for him to share his work with a wider audience, and he is grateful for the chance to have people stand in front of his art and experience its impact.
In my opinion, Ploplis' exhibit at Heart of Salisbury is a testament to the power of art as a form of therapy and self-expression. His unique style and process, combined with his personal journey, make his work truly stand out. I encourage everyone to visit the exhibit and experience the vibrancy and meaning that come through in his art.
