A major rail incident has sparked intense scrutiny and left Hong Kong's MTR Corporation facing tough questions. The recent partial shutdown of the Island line, lasting a staggering 1½ hours, has put the spotlight on potential human error and the need for improved staff training.
Former lawmaker and MTR engineer, Gary Zhang Xinyu, has stepped forward with a bold statement, suggesting that the disruption was likely due to a breach of maintenance protocols. Zhang, now at the helm of the Smart Transportation Alliance, emphasized the importance of investigating protocol adherence.
"Human error is a very real possibility," Zhang asserted on a radio show. "Unless there was an extraordinary mechanical failure, the odds of human error are quite high."
The incident, which occurred on Wednesday morning, saw train services between Sheung Wan and Quarry Bay stations suspended shortly after the Island line began operations at 6.07 am. Services resumed at 7.30 am, causing significant disruption to commuters.
MTR Corp attributed the incident to items from a maintenance vehicle and damage to track equipment, describing it as "rare." However, the question remains: was this a simple mechanical issue or a result of human oversight?
