Measles Outbreak in North Carolina: 15 Cases, 1 Hospitalization, and the Importance of Vaccination (2026)

This winter, North Carolina is facing a concerning health issue with 15 reported cases of measles, and alarmingly, one individual has been hospitalized due to the illness. This situation marks the state's first hospitalization related to measles this season, although specific details regarding the patient's location have not been disclosed.

According to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS), the dashboard tracking infectious diseases reveals that these measles cases have emerged since the week ending December 20. Among these, one case was identified in Nash County on January 27, while the remaining cases were spread across Union, Mecklenburg, Buncombe, Polk, and Cabarrus Counties, with Buncombe County recording the highest number at six cases.

What’s particularly alarming is that nearly all of those affected—except for one individual—are under the age of 17, with a staggering 74% of these cases involving unvaccinated individuals. This highlights a crucial public health concern: measles is an extremely contagious disease that can be effectively prevented through vaccination. The virus transmits easily through direct contact and airborne particles, capable of surviving for up to two hours in the air following an infected person’s presence.

Symptoms typically manifest between 7 to 14 days after exposure, but they can take as long as 21 days to appear. Initial symptoms might include:

• A high fever that could exceed 104 degrees Fahrenheit
• Persistent cough
• A runny nose
• Red, watery eyes, also known as conjunctivitis
• Unique tiny white spots in the mouth (Koplik Spots) appearing two to three days post-symptom onset
• A distinctive red, raised, blotchy rash that usually starts on the face before spreading to the trunk, arms, and legs approximately three to five days after symptoms begin.

Additionally, measles can lead to serious complications such as diarrhea, pneumonia, encephalitis (inflammation of the brain), and can significantly weaken the immune system.

The NCDHHS advises that anyone showing symptoms should contact their healthcare provider before arriving at clinics or emergency rooms to minimize the risk of spreading the virus.

For those who remain unvaccinated, the recommendation is clear: individuals aged one year and older should receive the measles vaccine to safeguard themselves and others. While it is not customary to vaccinate children under 12 months, the MMR vaccine can be administered as early as six months for those at increased risk.

In related news, officials from the Nash County Health Department are urging the community to stay vigilant after an unvaccinated child who had recently traveled abroad tested positive for measles following a visit to the UNC Health Nash Emergency Department.

Moreover, the measles outbreak in South Carolina has surpassed the previously recorded case count during Texas's 2025 outbreak, with health authorities reporting nearly 600 new cases within just over a month, bringing the cumulative total to 789. Nationally, the United States is witnessing an alarming trend, with the count of measles cases approaching 20% of the total recorded for 2025 in just the first month of the new year.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the U.S. reported its highest number of measles cases in 2025, and the situation seems to be escalating in 2026. In the first two weeks alone, at least 171 cases have been documented, which is nearly equivalent to the average annual total recorded over the past 25 years since measles was declared eliminated.

As we navigate this public health crisis, how do you feel about the current vaccination rates? What steps do you think should be taken to address this growing outbreak? Your thoughts are welcome in the comments!
