Metalmorphosis marks Masterplan’s first new material since Novum Initium (2013), and Grapow couldn’t be more excited. “This album captures our transformation,” he says. “We’ve grown as musicians and people, and you can hear it in every note. It’s classic Masterplan, but with a fresh, raw energy.” Founded in 2001 by Grapow and drummer Uli Kusch after their departure from Helloween, Masterplan quickly carved out a niche with their blend of strong melodies, technical precision, and modern metal flair. Their self-titled debut (2003) was an instant hit, setting the stage for a career marked by consistency and evolution.
Over the years, Masterplan has released critically acclaimed albums like Aeronautics, MK II, Time To Be King, and Novum Initium, each showcasing their ability to balance classic power metal with progressive elements. Their international success, extensive touring, and industry accolades cemented their status as genre leaders. But after a prolonged hiatus, the band is back with a renewed creative drive, thanks to their new partnership with Frontiers Music Srl. This collaboration marks a new chapter, promising a heavier, more aggressive sound while retaining their signature melodic sophistication.
In a recent interview with Brazil’s Todo Mundo Em Campo, Grapow revealed the album’s five-year journey. “I wanted to make it more direct, less progressive, and not too melodic or poppy,” he explained. “It’s a natural progression—you can’t repeat yourself. I like to challenge myself and explore new directions.” The lyrics, too, take a more critical tone, reflecting on the complexities of our “crazy world” while maintaining a positive outlook.
But here’s the twist: Grapow admits some tracks were left off the album for being “too far out,” including a Helloween-esque happy song and an Irish-sounding ballad. “I didn’t want 10 songs that sounded the same,” he said. “Every track is unique, and I’m proud of that.” Speaking of influences, Grapow credits his Helloween roots while blending them with heroes like Rainbow, Deep Purple, and even non-metal bands like Toto and Styx. “It’s a melting pot of all my idols,” he says.
